Where to start:
Before you contact our support department, have you checked the following.
Do you have a solid DSL, Sync or Link light on solid on your DSL modem or router.
Most ADSL modems have a number of indicator lights, these are mainly used for diagnostics and will give you a good indication on the status of your connection. The first thing when diagnosing a ADSL fault is to establish if you have a connection to the ADSL network. This can checked by looking at the DSL, Sync or Link lights on you router/modem. It is possible your equipment did not come with this light, so you may need to refer to the manufacturers manual on how to look for connection details to the network. If you have a solid DSL, Sync or Link light then you can rule out any faults to your exchange for now. If your DSL, Sync or Link light is out then go to the Phone line and Filters section for further trouble shooting.
Phone Line & Filters
If the DSL, Sync or Link light is out then you need to firstly check your phone line, have you got dial tone and can you dial a local number and connect on a clear and static free line? If you cannot connect a call or there is noise on your line then you need to contact Telstra on 13 22 00 and report a fault on your line. Advise them that you also have a ADSL service on the line. If you can connect a call and the line is clear, then there is a possibility that the line filters are not installed or working correctly. There is a limit to the number of phones and filters allowed on a single ADSL line. We would not recommend having more than 2-3 handsets, or in the case of a phone fax machine only one extra handset. If you require more than this number you can contact Telstra to arrange the installation of a central filter. Be sure that all your inline filters are correctly installed and are positioned in the right direction. You will need one inline filter for every handset that is connected to your ADSL line. To test this you can remove all devices on your phone line, restart your modem/router and try connecting.
Know Your Router/Modem
When you purchase any ADSL compatible Router/Modem they are much more advanced than your standard Dialup 56kbs modems. Most ADSL Router/Modems come complete with in built software that is used for diagnostics and configuration of your network and connection. If you get to know how this works it will make life a lot easier, you will not need to become and expert. Most of these
Connections to your computer
There are normally two ways to connect your ADSL modem to your computer. This depends on the make and model of the modem/router. The first is to connect through a standard USB cable. This usually involves installing driver like software on your computer to identify the router as a device. If you are using this method check windows device manager to see if the router is correctly installed and is active.
Another more reliable way to connect to the modem/router if available is via Ethernet or LAN. You will need a network card installed on your computer and have a network cable available. Please refer to your installation manual supplied with your hardware for more information.
